Taxonomic Comments:
  • Pianka (1991 Catalogue of American Amphibians and Reptiles 517.1-517.4) established the occurrence of Phrynosoma platyrhinos goodei Stejneger 1893, in Arizona.
  • Daniel G. Mulcahy, Allen W. Spaulding, Joseph R. Mendelson III & Edmund D. Brodie, Jr. (2006. Phylogeography of the Flat-tailed Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma mcallii) and systematics of the P. mcallii–platyrhinos mtDNA complex. 2006.Molecular Ecology 15(0): 1–20) recognized this race as a distinct species, P. goodei, and recommended the common name Sonoran Horned Lizard, which CNAH will adopt in the next printed edition of its scientific and common names checklist.
  • Collins & Taggart (2009 Standard Common and Current Scientific Names for North American Amphibians, Turtles, Reptiles, and Crocodilians. Sixth Edition) submitted for consideration the proposal by Mulcahy et al. (2006 op. cit.) to a lizard systematist group composed of Kevin de Queiroz, Bradford Hollingsworth, Jimmy A. McGuire, Richard R. Montanucci, Daniel G. Mulcahy, Robert Powell, Todd W. Reeder, Jack W. Sites, Jr., and James M. Walker, and a majority of those responding agreed.
