Axtell (1998 Interpretive Atlas of Texas Lizards 18: 1-19) applied this name to populations of H. maculata found on the Colorado Plateau of Arizona, also previously referred to as H. m. approximans.The standard common name is tentatively retained unless and until a new one is proposed .
