Axtell (1998 Interpretive Atlas of Texas Lizards 18: 1-19) restricted this taxon to Mexico and resurrected the name H. m. flavilenta (Cope, 1883) for some United States populations formerly referred to as H. m. approximans.The new standard common name is Striped Earless Lizard.
